Volunteering at the Community Garden - by Veronica
“My parents were European and my dad planted a large veggie patch and over 30 fruit trees on our average sized house block. There was nothing better than picking fresh, organic fruit and vegetables to satisfy a growling stomach or a sweet tooth when it was only a few metres from your back door. Those days were decades ago and now I’ve retired, I’m very keen to relive those childhood experiences by learning how to grow my own food source and to once again have the luxury of walking out to the garden and selecting a sweet or crunchy snack or something to share later at meal time.
Not long after MCG was established, I wondered over to enquire about what was on offer and walked away having signed a membership form. I met Helen, who is the President and oversees the running of the garden and Rhonda, a very dedicated and also extremely knowledgeable volunteer. Together, they made me feel most welcome and have answered and explained questions I have about establishing a vegetable garden - from composting, soil, seedlings, planting, when to harvest and anything else I’ve wanted to know. I realise I could have probably learnt this all on You Tube or Google but I so enjoy the company of the other people who attend, they too have a lot of knowledge to impart and it isn’t always about the garden!”
